War between the Pope and Obama

A recent Time Magazine article has quoted a Vatican official who stated that if Obama signs the Freedom of Choice Act in his first months in office, "it would be the equivalent of a war." In other words, it would start a metaphorical war between the Obama Administration and the Catholic Church. For, as we all know, the Catholic Church is not a military organisation, even if Popes in the past have been military commanders.

A number of blogs have taken news of this potential "war" and ran with it. Even I have put it in my title to direct attention to this post. But war is a strong word. Is it the correct one?

Maybe it is. The Freedom of Choice Act will wipe out all gains that pro-lifers have made in the US since Roe vs Wade with one stroke and make it impossible to restrict abortion in anyway, or to object to performing abortions. In other words, there will be absolutely no protection for the unborn at all - thus signalling an all-out war on innocent human life in the womb. It will be a complete release of evil masked with false compassion in the most powerful country in the world.

If that doesn't justify war, I don't know what does.

  1. Careful, you might give the gay activists the wrong idea :-)

If that doesn't justify a war of ideas...a metaphorical war...

  2. Did you see the US national exit poll (nicely made into a graphic by the NYT) - Obama one among Catholics 54-45.

(I'm sure you'll claim these people are TRUE CATHOLICS but still seems intersting...)

  3. That is Obama won 54-45. It seems that strange coaltion of Oprah and the nuttier regions of the right-o-sphere have assoicated Obama for ever with the phrase "the one" in my brain.

  4. David, yes, I've seen that figure. I've also seen a breakdown of the Catholic vote overall, and the most interesting thing is that among practising Catholics (ie, those that go to Mass every Sunday), the Obama vote is far less.

The thing with being a Catholic, is that being one in name only isn't enough. Every Catholic has the grave obligation to go to Mass every Sunday. Not doing so severs that person from the grace of God and can only be repaired with a contrite confession. So, yeah, I could quite easily say that many of those that voted for Obama were not true Catholics.

  6. Nothing, and the principle violated is that each and every person has the right to be safe in their mothers womb and to be born.

This requires no faith at all. Obama knows that, he just chooses to ignore it.

Perhaps, but even when you only look at catholics that attent Mass ('church' for the purpose of the surveys) once a week it's only Obama 49 McCain 50 - that's 16 million catholics voting for Hopey (and his Catholic running mate) - looking from the outside it seems like there is a disjunction between the priorities of the congregation and those of the Bishops and thier wars...

  9. Isn't this "Freedom of Choice Act" about removing restrictions that Bush put on abortion? Which is what incoming political leaders do - they ditch the parts of the previous guy's legislative programme that they don't like. In other words, 1. the Church may be planning to declare war on Obama for being a successful politician, and 2. if there's to be a war, Bush already started it.

  10. PM, not just restrictions by President Bush, but all restrictions put on abortion by previous Presidents and all state governments.
