Earth Hour 2008

There are 8760 hours in a year. March 29, 2008 we turned the lights off for one of them. We've saved the world. Crisis averted. Although next time, perhaps keeping the hospital machine that goes "ping" switched on will be on the "excluded" list. Our condolences to the families concerned.

You can be part of the tipping point by watching the video and basking in the power of protest. If you missed the event, then turn your lights off for an hour now. Then watch the video.

As Earth Hour is being hailed a success around the world, one blogger reports that they discovered something perhaps more important: turning the TV off for an hour. Now that's something I've been advocating (and living by) for ages. I just didn't realise I was an environmentalist.

  1. Turning off the TV is a good idea - for most of the time. It's not that you manage without it - it's more that it is a handicap waiting to be cured.

Arise couch-potatoes everywhere: through the grace of activity you are cured and can miraculously ambulate and cogitate. And lo! the outside world is 3D and high def.

  2. Bit is a silly attitude Zen, I have to say I am a bit disappointed by the views here. I have commented at No Minister on this so won't go into detail - I don't have much interest in all this climate change kerfuffle, and certainly didn't go gaga over Earth Hour but for goodness sake the intent was not to save the planet but to create awareness of environmental issues. Love or hate Al Gore, respecting our environment is in everyones interest - whether it be simple truths such as conservation and pollution or the more controversial issues of today, I don't really care. What I do know is that we must consider the environment we live in and treat it with the respect it deserves. Put aside the silly politics and consider the bigger issues which affect your family and future generations.

  3. I agree with your points about considering our environment. Indeed, I've said similar many times.

But does an hour of lights out "create" awareness? If people weren't aware prior to this, I'm a little stunned. If such people exist, then will lights out for an hour once a year make any real difference to what they say and do?

It's exactly politics I worry about, because the bigger issues which affect my family can be derailed by Greenie earth worshiping irrationality just as easily as rapacious exploitation of the environment.

Look what meaningless gestures get at the moment: Helen Clark named some kind of Environmental Heroine of the Year (I hope everyone remembers that award, because I can't be bothered finding the link) because Labour have mouthed Greenie platitudes but in actuality have gone backwards!

I'm really over it. Give me real policy we can digest, actions we can consider.

But if it makes lots of people happy, and they think it's finally created awareness, then good on them.

Thanks for the comment though. Same time next year?

  4. "But does an hour of lights out "create" awareness?"
    - sure it does. Joe Public needs constant reminding as he has a fickle memory - this relates to many issues. The press that Earth Hour got certainly made it an issue in the front of many peoples minds.

As for the rest of your comment, I honestly do not disagree. I am sure the Greenies et al took advantage of Earth Hour as did several others, but like I said, forget the silly politics and we should think about the bigger picture.

"Same time next year? Well maybe but like I alluded to, its not a passionate subject for me. It is a quote that applies to me re Farrar's ongoing battle to overturn Easter Trading Laws. I do enjoy chiding him and his liberal fans on this each year. Their gaps are just begging for correction!

  7. Hmmm.

First it was the black shirt and Brown shirt fascists. Now could this be the modern 'Green Shirt' version?

Gore to recruit 10M strong green army.
